How to Find Ski Deals

Skiing is more than just a great time out on the snow. Skiing is also more than just a way to take in nature. Skiing is a simple hobby that lets you combine the simple relaxation of nature with some thrilling exercise that doesn’t even feel like exercise. There is a reason that pretty much every gym in the world has a ski machine in it, after all. But if you aren’t especially rich, you are going to need to find yourself some ski deals. There are a couple of different ways to accomplish this goal, in both a technologically savvy way and a simple, almost bohemian way.

If you are reasonably tech savvy, there are actually weather forecasts in the areas of every significant mountain range. If you have a pair of skis and the desire to do some climbing, you don’t really need a ski lift to get up there. And getting down is as easy as strapping on your skis, giving yourself a good push, and letting Sir Isaac Newton do the rest for you. Finding the deals on lodging and lift tickets can take a little bit of research, but this can be a great way to find out where you can get up (and subsequently down) the mountains on the cheap.

Another way you can find ski deals is very old fashioned. Simply put, you find out where there are no people around, and you essentially claim a mountain as your own private skiing paradise. This way is more dangerous, as there may be lots of obstacles (and no help around if you happen to get hurt). But if you are the intrepid sort, and have no problem living on the edge, this can be the ultimate adrenaline rush. You may even be the first person to ever ski a particular part of a particular mountain. That’s no tourist package.

We may not all get to spend a year traveling like Elizabeth in Eat, Pray, Love, but maybe we could have just a slice of such an adventure. A -no carbs left behind’ tour of Italy may not be entirely out of the question if we are clever with the finances. Let’s look at some ways we can save money while enjoying the feast of art, food and culture that is Italia.

When visiting the more popular cities of Italy, better values in hotels and restaurants are often found in the small towns just outside. Ostia, a seaside town outside of Rome is a lovely alternative, as is Padua when visiting Venice. Both are a short train ride from the heart of the larger cities. Another alternative for Venice in the summer is Chioggia, across the lagoon, which has a boat that regularly ferries visitors over to St. Mark’s Square.

Another budget lodging alternative in Rome is one of the many hostels, for community living, or rent a small room in a monastery. In both cases, accommodations are simple, but clean and reasonably priced.

For visitors to Florence, there are some interesting options in the Tuscany countryside. Agriturismo, or rural vacations, are popular, offering stays in farmhouses or villas just a bus or train ride away from Florence proper.

In all cases, the restaurants are less expensive the further you go from the tourist centers, and a slice of pizza is always an economical and delicious evening snack. Many restaurants provide a reasonably priced large meal at noon, if you don’t mind a set menu.

As is often the case, you’ll get the most out of your budget if you travel to Italy in the off season, meaning anything but summer. There is so much art and architecture to enjoy in the beautiful cities, and simple pleasures in the countryside. You don’t have to write a book to afford an Italian vacation, But you might want to pack an extra large pair of pants.

How to Travel Cheap by Packing Light

The simplest way to save on your travels is by packing light. Bulky, weighty luggage is sure to be a drag on your trip at the expense of lightening your wallet. While most airlines charge for checking-in one or more bags (starting at around $25 and up) some will incur additional fees based on the bag’s size and weight. By packing light, it’s possible to avoid the fees all together by carrying your bag with you on the plane for free. Excessive luggage can also dictate what size hotel room you need, leading to even more spending. So travel cheap by packing light.

Start off by thinking about the luggage itself. If it can hold all of your essentials, just use a regular over-the-shoulder bag as they will certainly be the lightest you will find. Also, try to avoid luggage with wheels and other features that will weigh the bag down. If you must have wheels or something larger, opt for the polycarbonate hard-sided pieces which are lighter than those made of fabric.

Once you pick a nimble piece of luggage fill it with the least amount of things as possible. Concentrate on only the most essential items you’ll need, depending on your destination’s climate. Pants don’t need to be washed often, so it makes sense to only pack one or two pair. The same can go for shorts. There’s no need to skip on the delicates, but only one jacket should suffice. Remember, there are always conveniences like Laundromats or hotel services to have your things washed.

Lastly, wear as many travel items on you as you possibly can. Put on three shirts, a pair of pants over a pair of shorts, line your arm with all your Michele Watches, cover it all with a jacket and walk onto your flight in style.
