With Lake Michigan, the Chicago River and the Calumet River, Chicago offers a multitude of opportunities to get on the water. Since the colder weather in the midwest may prevent you from frolicking in the water on your own, you may want to opt to see the water routes of Chicago by boat. Chicago has a rich history, including the place where Historic Route 66 begins, where gangster Al Capone ran the city streets during prohibition and is the home of the Great Fire of 1871. Various dinner cruises that set sail from Chicago allow you to catch a glimpse of the city skyline while dining on fine cuisine.

”’Odyssey Chicago”’

Travel and Leisure magazine rates the Odyssey Chicago dinner cruise as “the best skyline in America.” Setting sail from the Navy Pier, you can dine on appetizers and sip cocktails until sitting down for dinner. The onboard chef prepares each food item fresh daily. Enjoy live music while dining and cruising the Chicago Lakefront. You can see the Museum Campus and Evanston, the city skyline of Chicago and more while eating or relaxing on the outdoor deck of the ship.

”’Spirit of Chicago”’

If buffet dining is more your style, board the Spirit of Chicago. Enjoy several trips to the buffet while catching views of the skyline of Chicago skyline, along the lakefront. The ship offers a cabaret-style seating arrangement, which makes mingling and meeting new people easier and fun. In addition to the buffet, the dinner cruise also includes appetizers, beverages, live music or some of the top DJs of Chicago.

”’Mystic Blue Full Moon Dinner Cruise”’

The Mystic Blue Full Moon Dinner Cruise allows for assigned tables while dining on a full dinner buffet. Enjoy live music while dining and mixing with the other guests. The dinner cruise skirts the lakefront of Chicago for views of the city skyline and goes all the way north to Evanston.

Anything can be a Great Deal

There used to be what was called a trickle down theory. This basically stated that what is good for the rich is also good for the rest of us, because their ability to earn (and thus spend) creates and grows the middle class. And when more middle class people enter an area, poor people need to work there doing things that middle class people would rather not (such as preparing their food, cleaning their houses, and walking their dogs). In a robust economy, it can sometimes be difficult to tell the middle class from the rich. Unfortunately, when the tide of easy credit and tons of high paying jobs rolls out, the truth becomes obvious.

All sorts of things which used to be hallmarks of the rich- things like Royal Caribbean cruises, organic produce, and massive houses- have become staples of the middle class as well. This is partially due to the trickle down effect, and also partially because everything has become more affordable to buy as it has become easier to produce. Ships are easier to build, and they can cram in more cabins, which means that a cruise which would have been unbelievably expensive a few decades ago is now within the reach of the average person. With the economy in shambles anyway, companies which used to sell luxury are now touting their value.

If you go through a discount site (and there are too many to even name), you can find a deal for more than half off. And in some cases, you can even score some on board credit at the casinos. Couple that with around the clock eating and all the same fun destinations (to say nothing of how the ocean never stops looking neat), and you have a winner on your hands. You should never pay the retail price for a cruise, so long as purse strings are tight.
