Have your vehicle systems checked, including lights, belts, hoses, fluids, and heater, and make sure your tires have sufficient tread depth; recommended minimum is 1/8 of an inch. Either use winter tires or have chains available.

2 – Bring an Emergency Kit. Be prepared for everything contingency, within reason. Be prepared with an emergency kit that includes, food, water, blankets, flashlight, paper, pencil or pen, emergency flares, maps, cellular phone, which only needs enough battery to at least turn on, service is not required to call 9-1-1 and a first aid kit. 

For the first aid, you should include the basics like gauze, antibiotic ointment or spray, Band-Aids in a variety of sizes, medical tape, tweezers, instant ice packs, alcohol wipes, ace bandages, aspirin, and a pain reliever, like Tylenol or Motrin. The other day I had an interesting phone call from a friend.  He wanted me to meet him to discuss something.  After plugging in the address into my navigation system, I drove to a new, up and coming area near downtown in our city.  The block was not totally full with businesses and I did notice that there were a few small bars, a coffee shop and other businesses either opening or newly opened on a few of the blocks.  I parked my car and met my friend in a vacant, corner storefront where he told me his new idea.  He wanted to start an organic restaurant in this location.  The block had other options but there was nowhere to grab a healthy meal.  It turns out that he had investors to help him get his business off the ground but he was looking for another partner who had experience in the food and beverage industry.  That person would be me.

If we are staying at homes then our food budget is limited and pre planner but when we have to move out of home to travel our budget usually gets disturbed because we have to spend almost double the amount of what we usually spend in our homes to buy the same food items. So before we went on our trip, I went online and searched Canada 411 for a few inexpensive dining options and some fun outdoor activities we could do on the cheap.  This online yellow pages for Canada was a great resource.  It provided local contact information for the restaurants as well as links to their websites where we could look at menus and menu prices.  I was also able to find a few good camping and fishing guides who were offering group discounts when we were going to be on our vacation.  Along with all of the information, this site also provides reviews from people who had used these businesses.  They gave great tips and help for someone who had never been there before.  And their reviews of restaurants were spot on.  Using this online guide saved us money and really added to our trip.

With Christmas shopping season here, everyone is scrambling to get the best of everything at the lowest prices possible. The stores are all packed. There is no chance of going somewhere and getting a parking spot near the doors either! I can’t complain too much though. I really do enjoy the shopping.

A friend of mine found the perfect gift for her son at a one-day sale that is coming up next week. The problem with that is the fact that she doesn’t get paid until the day after the sale! I have had that happen before. It can be so frustrating.

As you make plans to stay, try looking at youth hostels or the bidding for rooms sites online. A recent search for Chicago hostels showed rooms available in the hostels from $23 for semi-private to $53 for private. A couple of highly rated ones were the Parthenon and the Chicago Get Away Hostel.

Some people prefer to drive all the way through Canada on the AlCan Highway and enter Alaska through Tok Junction. Another option is a flight into Anchorage and a spectacular train ride up to Fairbanks passing through Denali National Park along the way. Get off and camp in the park. You’ve never seen anything like it. However you choose to go, a trip to Alaska will be an unforgettable family vacation, and if you’re willing to ‘go rogue’ it won’t have to break the bank.

So you take a bus or drive your car, or for really romantic travel, take a train to the nearby city of your choice.
